Pope Leo XIV made a historic half-day pastoral visit to the Republic of San Marino on Saturday, August 22, 2026, becoming only the third pontiff in history to visit the world’s oldest republic. He met with civil leaders at the Public Palace, led prayer at the Basilica of San Marino, and later traveled to Rimini, Italy. Arrived around 9:15 a.m. local time for a welcome ceremony in Piazza della Libertà.
State Meetings: Met with the Captains Regent (the joint Heads of State) at the Palazzo Pubblico.
Religious Service: Visited the Basilica of San Marino for Eucharistic Adoration and venerated the relics of Saint Marinus.
Praised San Marino as a model of freedom and common good, urging society to fight global conflict and division through the Gospel.
Subsequent Travel: Proceeded to Rimini in the afternoon to address the 47th Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples.
Pope Leo XIV is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City. Born in Chicago, United States, Prevost became a friar in the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and was ordained as a priest in 1982.
